Waltham, MA (March 31, 2013) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named National Grid as a 2013 ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in ENERGY STAR® Promotion winner for its “ENERGY STAR 20thAnniversary Celebration” campaign, which ran throughout the summer of 2012. National Grid’s achievements were recognized in an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 26, 2013.
This national award recognizes the comprehensive marketing and communications approach of the “ENERGY STAR 20thAnniversary Celebration” campaign in which National Grid called on youth organizations and summer camp programs throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island to help celebrate ENERGY STAR’s anniversary. The contest gave children ages seven to sixteen who were participating in summer programs the opportunity to come up with creative, team-building projects with environmental protection and energy efficiency themes. The groups then shared their projects on the contest website by uploading video, photos and project descriptions. Participants also rallied family, friends and their communities to vote for their projects online.
Each participating youth program was eligible to receive awards from National Grid and its partners including a party hosted by Radio Disney AM1260 at each camp; Boston Red Sox tickets and a chance to attend pre-game batting practice; passes to the New England Aquarium and Museum of Science, Boston; and much more. The two grand prize winners received a VIP trip to Boston GreenFest.
“By creatively promoting ENERGY STAR products, National Grid has led the way in helping consumers easily find energy-efficient products in the marketplace,” said Bob Perciasepe, Acting Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “National Grid’s innovative programs make it easier for Americans to save money and protect the environment.”
“We’re extremely proud of our partnership with ENERGY STAR because it’s an important component of our continued commitment to supporting energy efficiency,” said Edward White, vice president, Customer and Business Strategy. “National Grid’s energy efficiency program efforts have been recognized both within the Commonwealth and nationally, and we look forward to paving an even deeper path for energy productivity with ENERGY STAR by continuing to educate and create savings for our customers that will achieve significant environmental benefits.”
National Grid’s ENERGY STAR Anniversary Celebration campaign engaged more than 200 hundred children and adults from youth organizations and summer camp programs in Massachusetts and Rhode Island in learning about energy efficiency and environmental sustainability outside of the classroom. The groups created projects as diverse as a community garden to an exhibition of artwork made from recycled materials to a synchronized swimming-style performance with an ENERGY STAR theme.
The 2013 Excellence in ENERGY STAR Promotion Award is given to a variety of organizations in recognition of their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from the nearly 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
