December 6, 2013 – As one of the largest energy companies serving Massachusetts and Rhode Island, National Grid congratulates these states and the entire region for the announcement today of an initiative committing New England to cooperation on energy infrastructure. Created by a coalition of all six New England governors through the New England States Committee on Electricity (NESCOE), the initiative will help the region build a more diversified energy portfolio, reinvest in renewable energy and ensure a reliable energy infrastructure for decades to come.
“National Grid is proud to serve a New England community that has proven its energy leadership time and again, and this initiative is the latest step,” said Marcy Reed, president of National Grid in Massachusetts. “We fully support the expansion and reinforcement of electricity and gas networks, as well as investment in renewables, energy efficiency and other clean energy sources, all of which are crucial to protecting the region’s energy future and underpinning economic growth.”
“The cooperation of all six governors to sign this energy statement is truly an example that every person and organization in New England can follow,” said Timothy F. Horan, president of National Grid in Rhode Island. “The initiative recognizes the importance of developing and maintaining an energy infrastructure that meets the unique challenges of the 21st century. National Grid looks forward to working with NESCOE and ISO-New England to make energy more reliable, cost-effective and sustainable for all customers.”
With the goals of driving energy productivity, protecting the environment and creating more robust local economies, National Grid’s approach to planning and operating energy infrastructure in the Northeast aligns closely with the Governors’ initiative. The company empowers customers and communities by providing an increasingly resilient infrastructure, enabling new technologies to be implemented more quickly and engaging customers so that they can make informed energy choices.
About National Grid
National Grid (LSE: NG; NYSE:NGG) is an electricity and gas company that connects consumers to energy sources through its networks. The company is at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society - to create new, sustainable energy solutions for the future and developing an energy system that underpins economic prosperity in the 21st century. National Grid holds a vital position at the center of the energy system and it ‘joins everything up’.
In the northeast US, we connect more than seven million gas and electric customers to vital energy sources, essential for our modern lifestyles. In Great Britain, we run the gas and electricity systems that our society is built on, delivering gas and electricity across the country.
National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. It manages the electricity network on Long Island under an agreement with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and owns over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation, providing power to over one million LIPA customers. It is the largest distributor of natural gas in northeastern U.S., serving approximately 3.4 million customers in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
