Savings generated through National Grid's Energy Initiative Program

BUFFALO, NY, June 9, 2014 – The Sweet Home School District, with seven school buildings and related facilities in the towns of Tonawanda and Amherst, recently collaborated with National Grid energy efficient experts through an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) to identify energy cost savings within the school district. National Grid provided financial and technical support so the district could make extensive energy-reducing renovations to the various facilities it operates.

Throughout 2013, the Sweet Home School District replaced over 9,200 light fixtures and transformers. The district also installed a computer power management system, vending machine misers and new energy efficient pool covers, as well as exterior lighting upgrades. Since the process neared completion in early 2014, it has been estimated that the Sweet Home School District will save over $125,000 in electric utility costs annually.

“At a time when school districts throughout Western New York are looking to save money and reduce expenses, the cost savings through the energy efficiencies provided by National Grid could not come at a better time,” said Keith Langlotz, supervisor of buildings and grounds for Sweet Home School District.

“We encourage businesses and others such as school districts that operate various facilities to take advantage of the energy savings available through our energy efficiency initiative program,” said Dennis Elsenbeck, regional executive for National Grid. “Many of our energy efficiency programs are tailor-made for school districts that operate multiple buildings and are faced with ever-tightening budget pressures.”

Some of National Grid’s incentives for the Sweet Home School District, which covered the costs of all the energy efficient upgrades and new equipment, included approximately $250,000 for lighting upgrades as well as approximately $25,000 for transformers and $9,000 for pool covers. The entire district is currently benefitting from the cost-reducing improvements, which will add up to a savings of over $125,000 by the end of 2014.

The assistance provided by National Grid to the Sweet Home School District is part of company’s Energy Initiative Program that offers technical expertise and incentives to commercial and industrial entities through the purchase and installation of energy efficient equipment, materials and systems.

National Grid offers both prescriptive and customized incentives depending upon the type of project. Information about the suite of energy efficiency programs is available at .
