MEDFORD, Mass. --- National Grid today marked the 20th anniversary of its nationally recognized, award-winning energy-efficiency programs at an event held at Tufts University, Medford, Mass. Ian Bowles, Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs for the Commonwealth and Hon. Michael J. McGlynn, mayor of Medford, were on hand to congratulate National Grid and honor three Massachusetts organizations for their participation in National Grid’s energy-efficiency programs and acknowledge their overall excellence in energy efficiency.
On behalf of Gov. Deval Patrick, Secretary Bowles presented National Grid with a Citation congratulating the company on the anniversary of its programs.
“Energy efficiency accomplishes several goals important to the Patrick Administration - saving consumers money, reducing the need for more power plants, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts associated with electricity generation,” Secretary Bowles said. “I commend National Grid for its leadership in this important area.”
During the last 20 years, more than 3.4 million customer projects have been completed in Massachusetts under National Grid’s energy efficiency programs, saving more than $1.9 billion in energy costs and more than 19.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, enough to power approximately 2.3 million homes for one year. The programs also have reduced greenhouse gas emissions in Massachusetts by almost 11 million tons, the equivalent of removing 1.3 million cars from the road.
"I would like to congratulate National Grid and its customers on this special occasion,” said Mayor McGlynn. “Extraordinary companies like these are leading the way to help Medford and our nation stay ahead of the energy game and are showing others just how easy it is to go green. Their leadership in energy efficiency and commitment to protecting the environment is to be commended."
“Today we are honoring customers who have demonstrated a leadership role in energy efficiency and have raised awareness of greenhouse gas emissions and the threat they pose to our environment. With them, we have been able to demonstrate that energy efficiency works and should be a priority for all of our customers,” said Tom King, president, National Grid USA. “This is a perfect occasion to remind our customers – from the homeowner to the industrial plant manager -- that our programs can help lower electric bills, save energy and mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing energy consumption. If not already enrolled, we urge our customers to sign on.”
