National Grid Makes Significant Progress in New York Storm Restoration

June 11, 2008 - National Grid has made significant progress in restoring services to homes and businesses affected by series of severe thunderstorms that carried strong winds, heavy rains and lightning across large portions of upstate New York Tuesday, the company said today.

 

As of 11 a.m. power has been restored to approximately 40,000 of the more than 68,000 homes and businesses that were without service at the peak yesterday.

 

Extensive resources have been dedicated to storm restoration, particularly the hardest hit areas of the company’s Central and Eastern Divisions of New York, including more than 1,100 utility, tree and support personnel. Company resources from other regions in New York and New England have been deployed to the hard hit areas. As a result of the storm more than 100 poles were damaged, more than 300 power lines were reported down and more than 400 instances of tree damage to utility equipment were reported.

 

“We have a massive effort in place to work on restoration and we are grateful for the patience and cooperation of customers and local officials in the affected areas as we work to recover from this devastating storm,” said Kathy A. Lyford, National Grid’s vice president of customer operations for the Central Division. “We have been in contact with local officials and emergency management services and will continue to work with them throughout our restoration effort.”

 

For up-to-date information on power outages, visit www.nationalgridus.com and click on “New York” and then the “Storm Central” icon.   At the “Storm Central” page click on “Outages by County.”  Hardest hit areas include St. Lawrence, Oswego, Franklin counties (approximately between 6,000 -7,000 customers each), Lewis County (3,500 customers), Fulton, Jefferson and Saratoga counties (between 1,000 - 2,000 customers each), and Warren and Washington counties (approximately 500 customers each). Major restoration efforts are expected to take all day Thursday, with some scattered outages lasting to Friday, particularly in the hardest hit areas of the company’s Central Division.

 

As crews work around the clock to restore power, National Grid reminds customers about the following important information regarding safety during power outages:

 

  • Never touch fallen power lines or anything in contact with fallen wires such as a car, fence or tree. To report downed power lines call National Grid at 1-800-867-5222.
  • Disconnect sensitive appliances such as VCRs, DVDs, televisions, computers, and microwave ovens to avoid potential power surge damage when electricity is restored.
  • Turn off any electrical equipment or appliances that were on when power went off, but leave one light on so you will know when power is restored.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut.  Food will stay six to nine hours in a refrigerator without spoiling.  Frozen foods will keep about 24 hours.
  • If you choose to use a portable generator during a power outage you must make sure the main circuit breaker in your electric service panel box is in the OFF position or, in older electric service panel boxes, that the main fuse block is removed.  This is necessary to prevent your generator’s electricity from going back into the power lines in the street and potentially endangering the lives of line crews and other emergency workers.  Generator exhaust contains deadly carbon monoxide – never run an electric generator inside your house.
