National Grid Solar
National Grid has more than 100 years of experience in the energy industry, including 20 years of solar power experience. In the late 1980's, we installed and interconnected some of the first large-scale solar photovoltaic pilots. This included solar installations on over 30 homes and businesses in
Gardner, MA and a 100 kW installation at Beverly High School in Beverly, MA. To this date, we have connected approximately 5.64 MW of distributed solar generation to the Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire electric distribution system. In addition, we have administered installation of over 1,700 photovoltaic systems on Long Island, New York.

National Grid is committed to being a leading advocate of solar generation in the Northeast. We believe that climate change is a significant and pressing issue, and have taken measures to expand our renewable generation development by investing in solar power. Our planned 5 MW of solar developments is a major step in this initiative. We are doing our part to support Massachusetts in its goals to advance solar as a major energy source, and raise awareness about the benefits of solar power.
In an effort to do our part, National Grid recently constructed a Platinum-level LEED certified building for its new headquarters located in
Waltham, MA. On the roof of this building there is a 225 kilo-watt photovoltaic system that will generate approximately 5% of our buildings energy needs.
Our effort does not stop there. National Grid submitted a filing on April 23, 2009 to the Department of Public
Utilities (DPU) to construct, own and operate approximately five megawatts of solar generation on five separate
properties owned by National Grid. They include sites in
Dorchester,
Everett,
Haverhill,
Revere, and the
Sutton/Northbridge
border. We obtained approval from the DPU in October of 2009. The first Solar Site on the Sutton/Northbridge border was
completed on May 27, 2010. The Revere, Everett, and Haverhill sites were completed in December 2010.
Construction on Dorchester is expected to begin soon, and the system is expected to be completed in 2011.

project pages to learn about each photovoltaic system.
