Hurricanes
To stay prepared when a hurricane strikes:
- Maintain your home's electrical system. Occasional inspection and maintenance of the electrical system keeps you safe and your appliances and other electronic equipment operating properly. Contact a licensed electrician to inspect your electrical system, especially if you are experiencing problems such as TV/radio interference, tripping circuit breakers, blown fuses or dimming or flickering lights.
- Organize an emergency supply kit. Include bottled water, nonperishable food items, a first aid kit, rain gear, flashlights and extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, blankets and any special items such as diapers, infant formula or prescription medications.
- Be cautious during thunder and lightning. Except for emergencies, don't use the phone or electrical appliances during a storm. They can conduct dangerous amounts of electricity if nearby lines are struck by lightning.
- Secure your property. Before the wind grows strong, secure loose outdoor itemssuch as lawn furniture, grills, toys and trash cansor bring them indoors. Secure your windows with wide tape, boards or shutters, and wedge sliding glass doors to keep them from lifting off their tracks.
- Follow evacuation procedures. If you need to evacuate your home, shut off the water and electricity and pack a bag of necessities. Then lock your house and leave promptly, using recommended evacuation routes.
