National Grid
Basic Service Basic Service is provided to customers who have either not chosen to receive their energy supply from an alternative energy supplier or returned to us to supply their energy service. This is the part of your energy bill in which you can choose an alternate supplier. To learn more, visit Energy Choice.

Two Basic Service Options are available. These rates are approved by the Department of Public Utilities:
  • Fixed Basic Service—The price remains the same for a pre-established period of time, and is based on the average price over the rate period.

  • Variable Basic Service—The price changes monthly based on the contract prices charged to us by our Basic Service Providers.
This service ensures that no one will be without a supplier of electricity. To provide Basic Service, we solicit bids from electricity suppliers and then enter into a contract to purchase electricity from one or more of these suppliers. We do not profit by providing Basic Service and we do not profit from the contracts we sign with the suppliers.

* In an order dated February 7, 2005, the Department of Public Utilities approved our request to refer to Default Service as Basic Service.
