National Grid
Steps for Electric Service

Step 1: Provide the Information

  • First view our Service Territory Map to determine the availability of electric service in your area.
  • Determine the size of service you’ll need—either 100 amp, 150 amp, 200 amp or 400 amp.
  • Determine the type of service you want—underground or overhead.
  • If you will be heating with electricity, determine the total square footage of the area to be heated.
  • Determine the date you would like electric service to begin.
  • Fill out the new service order form for Electricity. Be prepared to provide the following information:
    • Your name, mailing address, phone number and daytime contact information
    • The address where electric service is to be delivered and specific directions, including the nearest intersection
    • The name, address and telephone number of your electrical contractor, if you are using one
    • The specifics about type and size of service as defined above
    • The date you would like electric service to begin

Step 2: We'll Do Our Work

  • Determine where the service will be connected to your home (for new service).
  • Provide you with a "Certificate of Compliance to Minimum Insulation Standards." (This only applies if you are converting a home to electric heat.)
  • Identify the owners of property on which we'll need rights-of-way and prepare the legal documents for same. (The responsibility to have these documents properly executed is yours).
  • Schedule service hook-up to your house, after the receipt of an approved inspection certificate.

Step 3: Do Your Work

  • Complete the electrical wiring.
  • Choose an authorized inspection agency (pdf) and get an application for electrical inspection. (Your local municipality can supply a list of authorized inspection agencies and an application form.)
  • Provide us with a completed "Certificate of Electrical Inspection" from the authorized inspection agency.
  • Provide us with a completed "Certificate of Compliance to Minimum Insulation Standards," if you are converting an existing home to electric heat.
  • Provide rights-of-way for our facilities, as required.
  • Pay any charges that might be required by National Grid. (The inspection agency will charge a fee for its service.)
