History of Rhode Island Gas Operations
Our natural gas operations are comprised of the former Rhode Island natural gas operations of New England Gas Company. Our roots date back to the mid 1800s and the former Providence Energy Corporation and Valley Resources, Inc. & Subsidiaries.

Providence Energy Corporation, the parent company of Providence Gas Company, or "ProvGas," was founded in 1847, and was the largest natural gas distribution company in Rhode Island. Valley Resources, Inc. & Subsidiaries (parent company of Valley Gas and Bristol & Warren Gas), was founded in 1850 as the Pawtucket Gas Company. Valley Gas was formerly part of Blackstone Valley Gas & Electric Company which divested its gas operations in 1964, and Bristol & Warren Gas Company was acquired by Valley Resources in 1992. Together, these entities comprised the Rhode Island natural gas operations that became New England Gas Company.

On August 24, 2006, we purchased the Rhode Island natural gas operations of New England Gas Company, and now deliver—safely, reliably and efficiently—both electricity and natural gas to our Rhode Island customers.
