National Grid Report Re-Affirms Commitment to Net Zero Future and Responsible Transition to Clean Energy for All

BROOKLYN AND HICKSVILLE, N.Y. –– Today, National Grid issued its Natural Gas Long-Term Capacity Second Supplemental Report that reaffirms the company’s commitment to achieving a Net Zero carbon future, while supporting a safer, more reliable and cleaner energy system for the nearly two million customers who rely on the service to heat their homes and power their businesses.  This report provides an update on the short and long-term energy needs of downstate New York customers, reviews the status of targeted solutions identified by the company in 2020, and emphasizes the importance of ensuring that no customer is left behind during the transition to a net zero future.  The report also outlines the near-term critical infrastructure needs and incremental demand-side programs necessary to meet energy demands, while highlighting the real possibility that additional supply infrastructure projects beyond those needed in the near-term could prove unnecessary if New Yorkers work together to reduce gas usage.

At the same time, we are working together with our customers and all our stakeholders to develop the right steps and programs, as well as new technology solutions and innovations, to ensure we can achieve the safe, reliable, zero-carbon clean energy future we all want - while leaving no customer behind.”

The report provides an update on the company’s Net Zero planning, the latest energy demand and capacity forecasts, and the actions the company has taken to meet the region’s demand for natural gas amid supply and capacity constraints. It also describes the company’s commitments to work within the framework of New York State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) and the company’s own net zero plans. Lastly, the report highlights the immediate need for targeted infrastructure and incremental demand-side programs to meet current energy needs; and evaluates potential alternative solutions and the associated risks and implications should the targeted infrastructure solutions and new demand-side programs not come to fruition.

Working Together to Best Define Our Energy Future: Public meeting on July 14

National Grid will host a virtual public meeting on the report on Wednesday, July 14. Members of the public, customers, potential customers and other stakeholders can learn more about the report’s findings and share their thoughts on how best to meet the region’s projected energy needs. In addition, a hard copy of the report can be found at public libraries across the downstate New York service area for viewing within the libraries as reference material. The public libraries are:

  • New York City: Brooklyn Central Public Library, Queens Central Public Library and St. George Library Center on Staten Island
  • Nassau County: Freeport, Plainview-Old Bethpage and Mineola Public Libraries
  • Suffolk County: Brentwood, Middle Country and Riverhead Public Libraries
