How it Works
Couple At Home During The Day

On hot summer days, when the grid is stressed, reducing energy can save energy costs and decrease pollution—and MassSave makes it easy!

After enrolling your qualified thermostat, National Grid will automatically send a signal to your thermostat to precool your home 3 °F before the peak event and increase your thermostat setting 4 °F during the peak event.

Peak events may occur during:

  • June-September
  • Weekdays
  • Non-holidays
  • Between 2-7pm

There are typically 15 peak events every summer - each lasting three hours.

You can opt out of a peak event at anytime by changing your thermostat setting.

If the program is not a good fit for you, we may disenroll you the following year.

Thermostats supported by this program are:

  • Building36
  • ecobee
  • Emerson
  • Honeywell (including Lyric)
  • Lux
  • Nest
  • Radio Thermostat
  • vivint.SmartHome

A central air conditioner or central heat pump is an air conditioner that cools an entire (or at least the majority) of a home or small business. This includes both ducted and ductless systems.

Window air conditioners and heating systems that do not cool are not central air conditioners or central heat pumps.

To participate in this program, your thermostat must be connected to a central air conditioner or central heat pump.

There are many options for purchasing a supported Wi-Fi thermostat.

For Homeowners, a supported Wi-Fi Thermostat can be purchased at:

  • Your local hardware stores
  • Online retailers, like Amazon
  • Through the MassSave website
  • If eligible, through a MassSave energy assessment

Unfortunately, you are not eligible for ConnectedSolutions if you don't have a central air conditioner or central heat pump.

Visit our Save Energy and Money tab above for more ways to save.

If you would like to disenroll your thermostat, please send an email with your name, address, and thermostat type to
