National Grid Foundation Grant to Support Boston Posse Foundation

July 28,2009

The National Grid Foundation has donated $20,000 to support the Boston Posse Foundationís Pre-Collegiate Training Program.

The Posse Foundation is a national organization that helps to support high school students who have done well academically but may not consider, or may be overlooked by, top colleges and universities that often depend upon traditional admissions standards such as SAT scores.

Locally, the Boston Posse recognizes these students for their exceptional academic and leadership potential and gives them the opportunity to attend top-ranked educational institutions across the nation. Posse scholars have a college graduation rate of 90 percent, which is far higher than the national average.

ďWe are delighted to make this gift to the Boston Posse,Ē said Carmen Fields, a member of the National Grid Foundation board of directors. ďOne of the National Grid Foundationís core principles is promoting education. Thatís why the Posse grant is so exciting. Itís a natural fit.Ē

The Posse Foundation offers its students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive teams, or posses, of 10 students who attend the same institution and help each other to deal with social and cultural pressures on campus. Students chosen as Posse scholars receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship from one of the Posse Foundationís 33 college and university partners nationwide. Local Posse partners include Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. and Boston University in Boston, Mass.

The Boston Posseís Pre-Collegiate Training Program, the recipient of the National Grid Foundation grant, is designed to help Posse scholars succeed and graduate. From January to August of their senior year in high school, Posse Scholars meet weekly with staff trainers and their Posse peers for two-hour workshops that focus on team building and group support, cross-cultural communication, leadership and becoming an active agent of change on campus and academic excellence.

The Posse Foundation has provided assistance to more than 2,650 students who have won more than $265 million in scholarship dollars to attend top-tier colleges and universities. For more information about the Posse Foundation, please visit www.possefoundation.org/

The National Grid Foundation was created to enhance the quality of life in areas where National Grid provides services. The foundationís ongoing challenge is to create opportunities for solutions to educational and environmental issues. Its objective is based on the principle that giving people the tools to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of individuals, families and communities. Since its inception in December 1999, the foundation has provided nearly $15 million in grants to hundreds of organizations.
