In the early days of COVID-19, National Grid was quick to recognize that the millions of customers the company serves were more dependent on energy than ever before. As an essential service provider, the company made the decision to sequester highly skilled employees at its regional control centers to ensure safe, reliable energy delivery for all of customers, including the hospitals and emergency responders caring for those affected, the pharmaceutical companies working to find a vaccine, and families who were navigating working and schooling from their homes. This extraordinary step in response to the pandemic transformed offices into bedrooms and conference rooms into dining rooms.

Shutdowns and sequestrations may be in our rear-view mirrors, but the supplies used by our team remained on hand. Our employees came up with a way to repurpose these supplies for good: donate them for humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

These pillows, inflatable mattresses, cots and blankets, as well as leftover toiletries, were delivered to St. Luke’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Rev. Mykola Andrushkiv, pastor at the church, accepted National Grid’s the goods, as well as a $1,500 donation to purchase relief supplies to send overseas.

“As part of a global community, our hearts break at the destruction hardship the people of Ukraine are enduring,” said Alberto Bianchetti, Central New York Regional Director of Customer and Community Engagement for National Grid. “One of the ways we can show our support for their struggle is to participate in local relief efforts run by local Ukrainian churches and cultural centers.”

National Grid’s donations are supported by its Project C community initiative, a commitment to support the places where our employees and customers live and work.

St. Luke’s continues to accept cash donations and donations of new blankets and towels, food, first aid supplies, and sanitary supplies.
