Richelle Stephans’ giant plastic tote is full of fun stuff like bouncy balls, balloons, scooters and soft foam rockets that can be launched skyward with a mighty stomp.

As Buffalo Museum of Science's school partnerships and programs manager, she’s equal parts educator and entertainer when she presents to schoolchildren to deliver the museum’s Science on Wheels program, which National Grid sponsors. As area schools face bussing challenges, Science on Wheels brings museum educators into school classrooms and auditoriums and community events.

On May 8, Stephans was at Buffalo’s George E. Blackman School of Excellence, where she wowed third and fourth graders with a series of interactive physics experiments.

National Grid has long supported initiatives that introduce area students to activities related to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). By supporting STEAM, and programs such as the one offered by the museum, the company helps to build an educated workforce that can benefit our business, our customers and communities in a variety of areas.

High School Students learn about National Grid careers

National Grid also visited with high school students at Buffalo’s Hutchinson Technical High School on May 2 and at Niagara Falls High School on May 10. At both schools, Electric Construction Supervisor Adam Shallenberger, Transmission Lineman Troy Rosser and Strategic Analyst Lisa Willey presented to students who were interested to learn about careers in the energy industry.

Shallenberger, Rosser and Willey shared videos and audio clips from the field as they talked about their experiences and what it takes to perform transmission line and other work. They also discussed a variety of safety precautions and various National Grid jobs and educational requirements.
