Melville, NY — June 12, 2024 — Generous Long Island postal customers recently donated 382,175 pounds of food as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) annual Stamp Out Hunger® food drive, which benefited the Island Harvest Food Bank. National Grid was proud to be the presenting sponsor of the event to end food insecurity on Long Island.

“We are grateful to all the Long Islanders who generously donated to help their friends and neighbors,” said Ross Turrini, Chief Gas Operating Officer, National Grid and Island Harvest Board member. “Congratulations to the Island Harvest team and the National Association of Letter Carriers for this year’s successful food drive, which will not only provide over 300,000 meals to Long Islanders but also give hope to those fighting food insecurity. National Grid is proud to be a part of this island-wide, annual community event.”

National Grid volunteers participated in a public service announcement promoting the food drive. All employees were asked to donate across New York State and over 60 volunteers participated in sorting food at the warehouse in the days after the food drive.

“As a longtime supporter of Island Harvest Food Bank, National Grid continues to be instrumental in helping to solve the chronic problem of hunger and food insecurity in communities across Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president & CEO of Island Harvest. “National Grid’s efforts in providing financial and human capital are yielding tangible results in improving the lives of our Long Island neighbors who often don’t get enough to eat, and for that, we, and the people we serve, are grateful.”

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the largest one-day nationwide food collection event. United States Postal Service letter carriers picked up bags of food left by postal customers’ mailboxes as part of their letter carrier duties. Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food to help address the ongoing public health crisis of hunger in America.

Donations collected on Long Island will help Island Harvest replenish its network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities in Nassau and Suffolk counties. According to Island Harvest estimates, the 382,175 pounds of food collected is the equivalent of approximately 318,500 meals for food-insecure people on Long Island.
