Students from the HerRise STEM Squad program visit National Grid’s control center in Melville and learn about the different careers in engineering and technology.

National Grid proudly welcomed HerSuiteSpot to its Melville location for the HerRise STEM Squad Career and College Exploration Program—a dynamic initiative designed to inspire and empower young women of color to explore educational and career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

High school students from across Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties—including Elmont Memorial, The Mary Louis Academy, Valley Stream Central, Baldwin, Uniondale, and Half Hollow Hills West—participated in a full day of immersive, hands-on learning.

The day began with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of National Grid’s Gas Control Room and Materials Lab, offering students a firsthand look into the vital systems that ensure safe and reliable energy delivery to our communities.

The highlight of the visit was an inspiring career panel featuring women engineers from National Grid, who shared their personal journeys, professional insights, and practical advice for entering STEM fields. Students engaged in open dialogue with panelists, sparking meaningful conversations around career possibilities and the importance of representation in STEM industries.

“The girls were incredibly engaged throughout the entire tour, and they were especially fascinated by the Gas Control Room,” said Yaryl Gonzalez, Community Engagement Manger for National Grid. “It gave them a deeper understanding of how gas is safely delivered to their homes.”

The program concluded with lunch, giveaways, and continued discussions, reinforcing the day’s message of education, exploration, and empowerment.

“From touring the control and testing rooms to meeting inspiring women engineers, the visit to National Grid sparked curiosity and opened their eyes to what’s possible in STEM careers," said Marsha Guerrier, Founder and CEO of HerSuiteSpot. "These moments matter, and they stay with our students long after the program ends. Thank you for showing up for our girls and for being a consistent example of what corporate responsibility and community investment should look like. The work you do to build a better future extends beyond infrastructure—it transforms lives.”

National Grid is proud to partner with organizations like HerSuiteSpot to help shape a more inclusive, diverse, and innovative future for the STEM workforce.
