Last week, the New York State Public Service Commission’s took action to accept National Grid's Long Term Gas Plan and setting a clear path to keep service safe, reliable, and affordable for  millions customers we serve across New York. At its public session in Albany on September 18, the Commission accepted National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan and determined that the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE) is required for reliability.  The order also calls for a plan to optimize supply if the proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) project comes online.

In response to the approval, National Grid New York President Sally Librera issued the following statement:
“We are grateful to the Public Service Commission for its thoughtful evaluation of our Long-Term Gas Plan, and their extensive analysis of the need for reliable energy for New Yorkers. The PSC order today affirms our determination that the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project is needed for enhanced reliability of our gas network.

The increased gas supply from the NESE pipeline will bolster reliability for essential energy needs in Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, while freeing existing gas supplies to better serve our customers on Staten Island and in Suffolk County. This added capacity is not only vital for meeting growing energy demand; it also has the potential to save New Yorkers up to $6 billion in electricity costs, with nearly half of those savings directly benefiting residents of New York City and Long Island.

National Grid is committed to delivering secure, affordable, and clean energy to the communities we serve. As New York’s power needs continue to grow and evolve, we believe the all-of-the-above energy strategy endorsed by Governor Hochul is essential to maintaining a resilient power network for millions of New Yorkers. We look forward to working with the state to address the items in their order, implement our gas plan, and ensure a reliable energy future for all New Yorkers.”

Here is what other community leaders are saying:

Partnership for New York City:

“The PSC decision on National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan is an essential step toward ensuring that New York’s energy supply remains reliable and affordable during what will be a decades-long transition to renewable sources. The economic health of our region depends on the availability of natural gas.”

James Whelan, President & CEO REBNY:

“We are grateful to the Public Service Commission for recognizing the importance of National Grid’s Long Term Plan, assuring a critical new link to additional energy supplies for New York City to meet the daily needs of approximately 2.3 million homes and business, while making access to natural gas more reliable.  The Real Estate Board of New York also applauds Governor Hochul and the State Energy Planning board for supporting a more pragmatic “all-of-the-above” approach that will help NYC continue the progress it has made improving air quality and reducing ground-level air pollution.”

Pat Guidice, Business Manager, IBEW Local 1049:

“The PSC’s decision on National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan — including its recognition of the critical reliability need for the NESE project — is a vital step for Long Island’s working families. As we transition toward renewable energy over the coming decades, maintaining a dependable and affordable supply of natural gas is essential to protect jobs, support local industries, and keep our communities running. From construction and utility workers to small business owners and homeowners, this plan helps ensure Long Island’s energy infrastructure remains strong — safeguarding livelihoods and powering economic growth across the region.”

TWU Local 101 President Constance Bradley:

“Today’s decision by the PSC to accept National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan is a major win for labor. In doing so they also validated that there is a need for the NESE project which will generate over 3,000 good-paying union jobs and support thousands more across key industries.  This a vote of confidence in New York’s workforce and economic future by the State, and we thank them.

Matthew Aracich, President, Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and Suffolk County, AFL-CIO:

“On behalf of the 65,000 men and women I represent here on Long Island in the Building and Construction trades, I applaud the PSC's decision on National Grid's Long Term Plan. The PSC makes clear that our economy can't grow without added natural gas supply from the NESE pipeline. The NESE pipeline will create thousands of good-paying union jobs with family sustaining wages.”

Donato A. Bianco, Jr., Vice President and New England Regional Manager, Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA):

“We applaud the public service commission’s decision to approve National Grid’s 20-year roadmap for natural gas supply. With this authorization, New Yorkers will benefit from an affordable and reliable energy supply and reduced emissions. Additionally, as a result of this determination, countless career-track construction jobs will be created, boosting local economies across New York State.”

Carlo A. Scissura, President & CEO, New York Building Congress:

“We are grateful for the Public Service Commission’s decision on National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan including their analysis that there is a reliability need for the NESE project.  NESE is the bridge we need to a just and sustainable energy future. The PSC’s action means more affordable energy, more economic development, more jobs, and more stability for our communities in New York. Today was a thoughtful decision, assuring a critical new link to additional energy supplies for New York City to meet the daily needs of millions of homes and businesses, while making access to natural gas more reliable.  The Building Congress applauds Governor Hochul and her administration supporting a more pragmatic “all-of-the-above” approach that will help New York remain a leader in business, economic development and cutting-edge energy policy.”

Matt Cohen, President & CEO, Long Island Association:

“The PSC's action to accept the long-term gas plan of National Grid including the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project is welcome news for Long Island's affordability and energy reliability future. It would make a transformative impact on our region’s ability to accommodate new economic growth and jobs while ensuring an abundant supply of energy."

Randy Peers, President & CEO, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce:

"We commend the Public Service Commission for approving National Grid’s Long Term Gas Plan and determining that there is a reliability need for the NESE pipeline project. This smart decision is a major step toward securing the critical energy infrastructure businesses in Brooklyn, and in NYC overall, need to grow, thrive, innovate, and compete in a rapidly evolving economy. NESE isn’t a substitute for renewable energy. We absolutely need both because the electric load is growing faster than existing sources of power can keep up. Today’s decision is an investment in a sorely needed bridge to greater renewable energy in the future and tracks with Governor Hochul’s call for an all-of-the-above approach to State energy policy.”

Thomas Grech, President & CEO, Queens Chamber of Commerce:

“The PSC’s acceptance of National Grid’s long-term gas plan and the determination that there is a reliability need for the NESE project is a win for every small business across Queens and beyond. This is a smart, stabilizing move that ensures we can plan for the future with confidence.  For our local economy to thrive, we need reliable energy that ensures homes and businesses won’t be forced to endure unnecessary outages. That risk is very real, and the NESE pipeline eliminates that risk by providing firm, reliable energy without interruption. This decision is another step in the call for an all-of-the-above approach by Governor Hochul that is reflected in the draft of the State Energy Plan.  We applaud her leadership for taking such a reasonable and pragmatic approach.”

United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn:

“Thank you @GovKathyHochul & @NYSDPS for recognizing the importance of @nationalgridus' Long Term Plan. We believe that an “all-of-above” approach — embracing renewables & necessary natural gas infrastructure — is important for stable energy and to reduce costs for consumers.”
