In the torpedo room aboard the USS Croaker, National Grid employees work to restore transformers. The Croaker launched in 1943 and was used in WWII. It was decommissioned in 1971. 


For the third straight year, National Grid employees donated their time and showcased their talents to help restore WWII ships at Buffalo and Erie County Military Park on Sept 11.

In recent years, a day of remembrance has become a day of volunteering. And more than 120 National Grid volunteers helped extend the lives of these national treasures by painting, welding and staining new wood to be installed througout the park, that include the USS Croaker, USS The Sulliavans and the USS Little Rock. 

One of the jobs included restoring and relocating breakers and transformers that delivered electrcity to parts of the ships that have been dark for decades. Once complete, the park will be able to turn the lights on and educate visitors in previously unseen areas of the vessels. It's thought that the last person to turn the lights out were likely sailors when the ship was in service.
