National Grid volunteers joined forces with Horizon Hearts, Inc. to refurbish and beautify a men’s emergency housing residence as part of the company’s 5th Annual Week of Service. More than 30 employee volunteers landscaped the yard, provided new picnic benches and a grill, and completed finishing touches on a brand-new basketball court—giving residents a welcoming outdoor space to gather, relax, and build community.

The event was one of 14 volunteer projects across Long Island during Week of Service, which mobilized more than 1,500 employees. The initiative is part of Grid for Good, National Grid’s global social impact program dedicated to increasing access to affordable energy, developing the energy workforce, and supporting community resilience. For the first time, employees across the U.S. and the U.K. participated in a united Global Day of Service.

Community Impact

“On behalf of Horizon Hearts, Inc. and the men we serve, I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous donation of a beautiful backyard space for our emergency housing. Your support has truly transformed our grounds into a welcoming and restorative environment where our residents can relax, gather, and build community.

This gift goes far beyond a physical space—it provides hope, dignity, and a sense of home for the men who are working hard to rebuild their lives. Your partnership reminds us that when community and corporate leaders come together, we can create meaningful change and brighter futures,” Dr. Victor Seltzer, Founder & Executive Director, Horizon Hearts, Inc.

“Horizon Hearts and our residents deeply appreciate National Grid’s generosity and commitment to making a difference. This new space is already lifting spirits and bringing smiles,” said Candace Aguirre Holley, Community Liaison, Incorporated Village of Hempstead.

“We are grateful to partner with Horizon Hearts on such a meaningful project during our Week of Service,” said Brian Sapp, Director of External Affairs, National Grid. “It was truly rewarding for our employees to see firsthand how their time and effort can create lasting impact. From installing a basketball court to revitalizing the grounds of the emergency housing, this project is about restoring dignity and creating a safe, welcoming environment. We are proud to give back to the communities we serve and honored to support the incredible work Horizon Hearts is doing.”
