National Grid Announces 2026 Scholarships

National Grid has announced the opening of applications for two scholarships designed to strengthen the future energy workforce in New York and Massachusetts: the Electric Worker Scholarship and the Charging our Future Scholarship. Together, the programs will award 20 scholarships to students pursuing careers in the energy and engineering fields.

For the third consecutive year, the Electric Worker Scholarship will provide 10 awards to New York state residents enrolled at Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) in Troy, NY. The awards will offer up to $7,000 in tuition assistance to students pursuing either an Electrical Construction Maintenance associate degree or an Overhead Electric Line Worker certificate.

This scholarship will cover tuition, fees, and books, as well as $600 of required tools. Recipients will also receive one-on-one mentoring from National Grid employees, who will share career advice and guidance on schoolwork. Through this educational, mentoring program, National Grid remains committed to the students’ academic success and their future careers.

“Building the energy system of the future starts with investing in the people who will design, maintain, and power it,” said National Grid New York Chief of Electric Operations Matt Barnett. “These scholarships help remove financial barriers while creating real-world pathways into careers that are critical to our region’s economic growth and clean energy transition. Our continued partnership with HVCC is an investment in the next generation of line workers and electrical technicians who will serve communities across New York.”

Eligible applicants must be New York residents who are high school seniors, graduates, or current college students planning to enroll at HVCC. Selection is based on financial need, academic performance, work experience, leadership, and a personal statement outlining career goals in the energy industry.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Charging our Future Scholarship will award 10 scholarships to applicants who are residents of either New York or Massachusetts, and plan to attend college in either of those states. Students may live in one state and attend college in the other.

Each scholarship provides $10,000 per academic year to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with priority given to electrical engineering and power systems-related coursework. In addition to financial support, scholars will receive a paid summer internship with National Grid.

“The Charging our Future Scholarship combines financial support with the hands-on experience essential for preparing students for careers in a rapidly evolving energy landscape,” said National Grid Vice President of Electric Asset Management Natasha Deschene. “The paid internship allows students to apply what they’re learning in the classroom while gaining exposure to real-world energy infrastructure and operations.”

As the internship takes place within National Grid’s service territory, students attending school or residing outside those areas in New York and Massachusetts must be willing and able to commute. This requirement will be clearly communicated throughout the application process.

Applications for both scholarships are now open, and will close on March 31, 2026. Award notifications will be made in early June with a public announcement to follow in August 2026.
