BROOKLYN, NY / WALTHAM, MA – National Grid celebrates National Engineers Week with community partners across New York and Massachusetts with hands-on programs under the theme “Energy Through Engineering,” highlighting the importance of STEM/STEAM skills to inspire the next generation of innovators.

National Engineers Week is an annual celebration of engineers and the solutions they create. This year it’s celebrated February 22-28, 2026. National Grid kicked off activities on Feb. 17 when New York schools were out for Winter Recess.

“When we invite children to explore science and invention, we nurture a future workforce rooted in curiosity, collaboration and impact,” said Robert Simmons, Vice President Social Impact and Community Engagement for National Grid. “Our community partners are bringing engineering and science to life for young students – building understanding of, and interest in, engineering and technology careers, while recognizing the contributions engineers make to society and quality of life.”

 Event Highlights

  • February 17 – BioBus ribbon cutting with Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM): National Grid sponsored BioBus, an all-electric mobile science lab. Trained Community Scientists demonstrated energy and sustainability programs using high-tech microscopes and interactive lab tools. The BioBus will travel across New York and Massachusetts, bringing hands-on science exploration to tens of thousands of K-12 students through school visits and pop-up events.  LICM celebrated Engineers Week with programming titled “Step Into Oz.” Visitors helped design a Green Emerald City, collaborating on a growing city sculpture by adding buildings, inventions, transportation, and green spaces using craft materials and simple circuits.
  • Feb. 25 -- Boston Children’s Museum: Tinker Kits for hands-on STEM exploration and experiments for young children in Boston and Brockton.
  • Feb. 28 – Say Yes Buffalo Saturday Academies: Hands-on engineering challenges at Buffalo public schools for students up to 8th grade, including circuit design, renewable energy exploration, mechanical systems and sustainability-focused design activities. For more information or to participate visit Saturday Academies.

Due to the recent blizzard, the following events were rescheduled:

  • March 4 -- Science from Scientists: National Grid volunteers will assemble 300 STEM kits and deliver them to third, fourth and fifth graders at Hosmer Elementary School in Watertown.
  • March 9 – Seagull Solar STEM Showcase: Students from Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School and Staten Island Technical High School will mentor elementary students from PS 59 through hands-on STEM stations focused on mini solar race car construction and track testing including solar energy systems and charging fundamentals, and demonstrations on high frequency amateur radio communications, robotics and underwater robotics and much more.

National Grid’s National Engineers Week activities reflect the company’s Jobs & Skills pillar of their Grid for Good commitment, to drive early interest in STEM/STEAM education for youth.
