National Grid Earns EEI Emergency Recovery Award for Exceptional Response Following December Wind and Rain Storm
Categories:
WALTHAM, MA – National Grid has been awarded the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) Emergency Recovery Award for its exceptional response to the December 19, 2025 wind and rain event that caused widespread outages across Massachusetts.
The storm brought damaging winds exceeding 80 mph in some areas and heavy rainfall, leading to more than 40,000 new outages in approximately 30 minutes and impacting over 90,000 customers.
Despite the severity of the event, National Grid restored service to 95 percent of customers in less than 24 hours, reflecting the dedication of the company’s highly trained workforce, year-round preparedness, and investments in equipment and automation.
“We sincerely appreciate EEI’s recognition which underscores the commitment our teams bring to every storm response,” said Lisa Wieland, President of National Grid New England. “Restoring power safely and quickly is our top priority and I’m incredibly proud of the professionalism and dedication our crews demonstrate each and every day in support of our customers and communities.”
Presented annually to EEI member companies, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery efforts by electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. Winners are selected by a panel of judges following a nomination process. The awards were presented during EEI’s Board of Directors and Chief Executives meeting.
“Keeping the lights on — and restoring power quickly after severe weather — requires extraordinary preparation and the dedication of highly skilled workforces,” said Drew Maloney, President and CEO of EEI. “The Recovery Award reflects the professionalism and hard work of National Grid’s storm recovery teams, who prepare year-round to ensure they’re ready to face tough conditions to serve their customers and communities. EEI is proud to recognize National Grid for its exceptional response.”
