National Grid Upstate Electric Crews Sent to Support Underground Work in New York City
Categories:
National Grid underground electric crews spent time in the “Big Apple” over the past week supporting Consolidated Edison, Inc. (Con Edison) as they worked to complete an accelerated schedule of underground repairs across New York City. This work followed a series of winter storms and heavy snowfall that impacted the region in recent weeks. Utilities often support each other after major weather events to provide “mutual assistance.”
Underground electric systems are among the most complex parts of the energy grid, requiring highly specialized training and equipment. Technicians must work safely in confined spaces, often several stories below street level, where electric cables carry significant loads and where multiple utility systems—electric, natural gas, steam, water, sewer and telecommunications—run in close proximity. Crews routinely navigate manholes, vaults, ducts and conduits under demanding conditions to ensure reliable service.
During the deployment, National Grid crews assisted with cable splicing projects supporting Con Edison’s efforts to expedite critical repairs and maintain system reliability for customers across New York City.
“National Grid in upstate New York has a long history of maintaining complex underground electric networks,” said Matt Barnett, National Grid New York Chief Operating Officer, Electric. “We operate the underground systems in many of the largest cities across upstate New York—including Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica and Albany—and our crews are known for their safety, skill and expertise. We’re always ready to support our fellow utilities when called upon, especially following severe weather events.”
National Grid deployed 22 underground electric employees to New York City along with six specialized utility trucks equipped for confined space work, cable splicing, network balancing and fault detection. The crews are working alongside Con Edison teams to help reinforce the city’s resilient but heavily utilized underground network.
In upstate New York, National Grid delivers electricity to 1.7 million customers in more than 680 cities, villages and towns, maintaining both overhead and underground systems across a service area that spans nearly 25,000 square miles.
