National Grid Surpasses 500,000 Smart Meters Installed Across Massachusetts
Categories:
WALTHAM, MA — National Grid today announced it successfully installed more than 500,000 smart meters across Massachusetts, marking a major milestone in the company’s multi year effort to modernize the electric grid and deliver enhanced benefits to customers across the Commonwealth. This achievement represents more than 35 percent of the company’s total targeted installations statewide.
Installation of smart meters continues to accelerate month over month, with National Grid on track to deploy new meters to all 1.4 million electric customers in Massachusetts by the end of 2027. This long term investment supports a more resilient, reliable, and customer focused energy system.
"Reaching 500,000 installed smart meters is an important achievement for our customers and our company," said Dan Tripp, Vice President, Customer Process and Performance, National Grid. "This technology puts customers in control by providing clear, timely insight into their energy use, helping them make informed decisions to manage consumption and costs.”
Smart meters provide customers with access to detailed electricity use information in 15 minute intervals through National Grid’s MyAccount portal. This increased visibility allows customers to better understand daily usage patterns, identify their highest use days, and manage their electricity use.
Smart meters also help the company to deploy resources more efficiently during storms and major outage events. The meters send a signal back to the control room when they lose power, providing timely insights into a customer’s power status. This allows National Grid to deploy crews more effectively.
The milestone installation occurred in Medford, a community in which National Grid has installed over 9,000 smart meters.
In addition to customer benefits, smart meters improve operational efficiency by reducing estimated bills, supporting faster service connections and disconnections.
National Grid’s smart meters are highly accurate, safe, and secure. All data is transmitted through encrypted networks to protect customer privacy and ensure information is handled responsibly.
As smart meter installations continue through 2026, National Grid remains committed to delivering reliable service, modern technology, and tools that put more control into the hands of customers across Massachusetts.
