Electric Connections for Commercial Developments & Services
If you're a business owner, developer, contractor or electrician working on commercial construction projects – including projects with multiple homes – our team is available to help you determine what your project will need, and we’ll help you through each step of the process. We've outlined all of the steps below.
Account Management Engagement
If you are involved in long term planning of your business or a prospective development, engaging with our Account Management team may be an option to help align our services with your goals by identifying your future load needs, opportunities for electrification, and energy efficiency goals. In addition, for detailed options analysis and business planning , a support services agreement can be established for support from National Grid’s engineering staff.
Are you investigating prospective locations for your commercial development or service, including residential developments? Download the Step Zero Process for projects that will require 200kW of load or greater through our Step Zero process. This process will quickly review the available capacity in the area and determine if an engineering study will be required
Before You Apply for a Service or Construction Work Order
Before you apply for a service or construction work order, you will need a 911 address or lot number associated with the location. A 911 address or lot number is essential for emergency services and helps ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved in the project. Need a 911 lot number? Contact your local town office to get started.
Once you have a valid 911 address, complete our Electric Service Request Form to begin your new project. There are three ways to submit the form:
Online: Access our user-friendly portal and submit your form electronically.
Email: Send your form to workrequest@nationalgrid.com
A dedicated Establish Service Representative (ESR) will guide you through the process and connect you with your job owner, who will be your main point of contact until the end of your electric project. The job owner will communicate with you throughout the project and may request a Proposal for Electric Service (PES) package depending on your project scope.
Once we have your project details and required documents, your request will move to the design phase.
During the design phase of your electric connections project, our goal is to develop a comprehensive plan that meets your needs, complies with laws and regulations and optimizes cost. We want to ensure that the design aligns with your requirements and provides reliable service for you and your neighboring customers. Your job owner and the assigned distribution designer will guide you through this phase. A detailed scope and cost of your project will be determined, and required permits and rights for your construction project will be initiated.
To install the needed electric infrastructure, National Grid must obtain all legal and regulatory rights related to the customer's/developer’s property as well as in the public way. In addition, your service agreement will be drafted in accordance with the Terms and Conditions for Distribution Service tariff provision (MDPU 1570 Dist TCs_10.01.24.) and any other terms that National Grid deems are reasonably necessary in connection with your installation. This service agreement and any required construction advance will need to be signed and paid prior to the project advancing to construction.
Once necessary rights, agreements, and payments (if needed) are received, the scheduling and construction phase of the project commences. The activities required during this phase will vary depending on the complexity of your project. Our team will conduct a thorough site pre-check to ensure readiness and then schedule required activities.
Before energizing your new or upgraded service, you must obtain a municipal wiring inspection from your electrical inspector who has jurisdiction in your area. It's the responsibility of the electrician to request this inspection, and we cannot proceed until we receive an approved municipal inspection. The licensed electrical inspector will notify us once the new service has passed the inspection. Once notified, National Grid will schedule any remaining construction, energize your service, and install your meter.
Please note that the construction schedule may be subject to change or delay due to weather conditions, prior scheduled work, and unforeseen emergencies. The complexity of your project along with the availability of resources, materials, and equipment can all impact the estimated timeline. We will do our best to keep you informed of any delays that may occur.
How long will this all take?
The duration of activities that ultimately lead to new or upgraded service will vary based on your project's complexity. Please refer to the Durations table for more details.
