Three National Grid electric operations employees finished among the best in their field at the International Linesman’s Rodeo in October.

Alex Benoit, a line mechanic based at National Grid’s Utica Service Center, placed second out of 182 apprentices with 478 points, 10 points behind the competition’s winner. Scott Thompson, who works in Avon, finished third at 472 points. Derek DiCastro, a line mechanic who also works in Utica, was fifth. All seven National Grid employees from New York competing as apprentices finished in the top 25.

“The power of National Grid’s business is its people,” said Matt Barnett, National Grid’s Vice President of New York Electric Operations. “We’re proud of the recognition our team earned at the International Linesman’s Rodeo, just as we’re proud of how they serve our customers every day.”

The Best of the Best is the overall competition for apprentice and journeyman linesmen at the Rodeo. Individuals sit for a written test of operational knowledge and safety practices, and took part in timed physical tests, including pole climbing and a “hurtman rescue.” Judges monitor each event and award or deduct points based on safe completion of tasks in accordance with the competition’s rules and rules for safe operation. An individual is an apprentice for four years after at the start of their career on a line crew. After four years, they become journeymen.

“What an amazing feat to have three of the top five apprentices in the world,” said Joshua Conway, who coordinated the Upstate New York that competed. “This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication that our employees have for their work, and the many hours they spend mastering their craft.”

The International Linesman’s Rodeo is held annually in Overland Park, Kan. It brings together linesmen from utilities across the country for an expo, educational opportunities, and skills competition.
