LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — An upcoming project to improve reliability and resiliency for residents of the Village of Lake Placid and to support events, such as the Lake Placid 2023 FISU World University Games in January 2023, will require a 10-hour planned outage beginning at 8 p.m., Sept. 20.

Construction has been underway since July to replace infrastructure on the 45-mile radial transmission line serving the village, including the installation of new wooden and steel poles along easements and right of ways. The project will cost approximately $8 million and will increase reliability and create a more resilient line to the village. The planned outage is necessary as part of the project.

The Village of Lake Placid operates an independent municipal electric department and electricity is delivered to the village’s system through National Grid’s transmission network.  National Grid will de-energize the existing transmission line at 8 p.m. on Sept. 20 and crews will work overnight to replace poles. National Grid and the Lake Placid Electric Dept. will work together to restore power by 6 a.m. on Sept. 21.

There is no anticipated interruption of school for students, faculty and staff of the Lake Placid Central School District. Additionally, village and town leaders are working with local businesses to mitigate impacts. Residents with questions or concerns should contact the Lake Placid Village Electric Dept. at 518-523-2597.

The first major event to benefit from the project will be the upcoming World University Games. The 11-day event, scheduled for Jan. 12 to 22, will bring more than 2,500 athletes to the region to compete in winter sports including skiing, ice hockey, and figure skating. The World University Games is the largest multi-sport winter competition outside of the Winter Olympics.
