The EV Charge Smart Plan helps make electric vehicle at-home charging affordable, flexible, and environmentally friendly!

This plan provides financial savings to charge your EV easily and smartly within the convenience of your home through a smartphone app during off-peak hours, 11:00 pm to 7:00 am daily (including weekends and holidays), when there is less strain on the grid and energy costs are lower.

The plan offers:

  • Easy-to-use smartphone app providing charging and incentive status.
  • Opportunity to earn a $15 monthly incentive applied to your National Grid bill.*
  • $25 one-time enrollment incentive after three (3) months of active participation in the plan.**
  • Ability to further reduce carbon emissions, making a positive environmental impact.
  • Passive or active managed charging depending upon EV/EVSE compatibility.

* For customers who source electricity from a supplier other than National Grid, the incentive is $14.61 and will be listed in the Delivery section of your National Grid bill.

** Enrollment incentives are paid once to the participating National Grid account number.

Plan Eligibility:

To participate in the plan, you must:

  • Be a New York (NY) National Grid residential electric customer on the Standard Residential SC-1 rate. Customers on the Voluntary Time of Use (VTOU) or SC-1C rates are ineligible for the Plan. Please refer to the Delivery Section within your National Grid bill to determine your electricity rate; and

  • Have a compatible vehicle OR home EV charging station with:
    • Active telematics package OR
    • Charging Station that is network enabled.

Compatible Equipment

To participate in the EV Charge Smart NY Plan, the Charge Smart NY app requires compatible vehicle telematics or a network connected home charging station. Check the dropdown list to see if your vehicle or hardware is currently compatible.

Additional subscription fees may apply and are based on your vehicle manufacturer.

Enroll in the plan:

    1. Download the National Grid Charge Smart NY app and follow the set-up instructions.
      Download on the App StoreGet it on Google Play
    2. Select the ‘Opt-In’ button.
    3. Read and accept the National Grid Participation Agreement, this will complete your enrollment into the new plan.

Vehicle or Charging Station not Compatible?

If your EV or charging station is not on the Compatible Vehicle and Charging Equipment List, complete the EV Charge Smart Wish List below to:

  • Identify that you are interested in learning more on how to purchase and have installed a compatible charging station or
  • To have your vehicle and charging station information considered for future compatibility

Please be sure to review the Compatible Vehicle and Charging Equipment List prior to joining the Wish List.

Complete the Wish List form if your vehicle is not listed on the “Compatible Vehicle and Charger Equipment List” dropdown list above. If your vehicle is listed above then you do not need to complete the Wish List form and can enroll in the program immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

The EV Charge Smart Plan is a program designed to provide Upstate NY customers with financial incentives to charge during off-peak hours (11 p.m. to 7 a.m. est.) when there is less strain on the grid and energy costs are lower.

The plan provides the opportunity to save $180 annually in monthly incentives and earn a one-time enrollment incentive.

Enrollment Incentive
A $25 one-time incentive* will be awarded for actively participating in the program for a minimum of three (3) months.

* Enrollment incentives are paid once to the participating National Grid account number.

 

Monthly Incentive
Customers can earn a $15 incentive** each calendar month. To earn the incentive, customers need to:

  • Charge a minimum of 50 kWh at-home and,
  • 80% or > of at-home charging occurs during off-peak hours

** For customers who source electricity from a supplier other than National Grid, the incentive is $14.61 and will be listed in the Delivery section of their National Grid bill.

The EV Charge Smart Plan's off-peak hours are from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily (including weekends and holidays). The off-peak duration is when demand for electricity is at its lowest, meaning that EV owners that charge off-peak are helping reduce the cost of electricity for everyone and improving the resiliency of the electric grid.

To participate in the plan, you must:

  • Be a residential electric customer in New York on the Standard Residential SC-1 rate and
  • Have a compatible vehicle or home EV charging station (Compatible Equipment List).

Customers on the Voluntary Time of Use (VTOU) or SC-1C rates are ineligible for the plan. Please refer to the Delivery Section within your National Grid bill to determine your electricity rate.
