Why heat pumps?

Listen to our expert Jenny Cross as she explains the benefits of installing heat pump equipment and the incentives available to you.

How much could I save?

Heat Pump incentives for heating and cooling equipment vary by type of premise, project scope and type of heat pump.

Additionally, some communities have been designated by the state of New York to receive assistance and additional investments to accelerate adoption of high-efficiency technology and advance clean energy and electrification. If you live in one of the selected advancement communities you can claim higher incentives on heating and cooling heat pump technology under the DAC Tier. To find out if you qualify, enter your address in the search box of NYSERDA’s interactive map.

Incentives available

Note:

NYS Clean Heat incentives for heat pumps are only available to National Grid electric service customers.

Decommissioning: Central air-source, mini split and air-to-water heat pump projects must completely remove previous heating source from service to qualify for higher incentive.

Stack up the savings

In addition to our equipment rebates, you may also take advantage of other ways these all-in-one systems could be more affordable for your budget, like low-interest financing options, and NYS tax credits.

How will my energy use change when I switch to a heat pump?

Energy use varies by household and is influenced by many factors like weather, occupancy, personal behaviors, appliances, insulation condition, etc. But upgrading to high-efficiency equipment and switching to clean energy is always a step in the right direction. Learn about the energy shifts you will experience when you upgrade to heat pump technology.

Check below to learn about the energy shifts you may experience when you upgrade to heat pump technology.

When you stop heating with natural gas, oil or propane, you’ll decrease or possibly eliminate your fossil fuel costs, but will see higher electricity usage during the colder months. This will be offset by increased efficiency in cooling during the summer months, which will reduce your annual energy consumption.

Heat pumps provide 2 to 4 times more heat energy per unit of electricity compared to electric resistance heating. They are highly efficient, and you'll likely have less energy waste. A typical home using a heat pump may use half or even less electricity than a home using electric resistance heating for the same heating load.

Heat pumps offer high-efficiency heating and cooling in one system that will keep you comfortable all year long. During the warmer months you should experience lower energy use, and more cost savings compared to other central or window air conditioning systems. If you currently do not cool with air conditioning, you might see an increase in electric use after you upgrade.

How do heat pumps work?

Heat pumps save energy because they do not generate heat by burning fuel, but rather move it from one place to another. During the colder months, heat pumps take heat from the outside air and transfer it into your home. During the warmer months, they keep your home cool by pulling heat from inside your home and transferring it outside.

When is the best time to upgrade?

Keep an eye on the health and age of your current equipment so you can be prepared to replace it when the time is right for you-- because nobody wants to experience a breakdown in the middle of winter. As your appliances age, they give signs that they may no longer be working like they used to, and most likely are consuming more energy to keep up before they finally stop working. Don’t wait for your heating and water heating equipment to break down before you replace them-- Be prepared.

Check below to learn New York state’s approved Average Life Span of the most common HVAC systems and determine if yours is due for an upgrade soon:

Use this chart to see if you should upgrade your water heater, furnace or boiler to a high-efficiency heat pump.

Type of Equipment Average Effective Unit Life Span (Years)
Water Heater 10-15
Air Conditioner 15-20
Combination Boiler-Furnace 20
Furnace (Gas) 22
Steam Boiler (Steel Fire Tube) 25
Steam Boiler (Cast Iron or Steel Water Tube) 30

As a National Grid electric customer, you will always be supported. Our statewide network of  NYS Clean Heat contractors is a selected group of licensed professionals who have been pre-qualified and trained to meet your home needs and the program's high-quality standards. Working with these participating contractors is a requirement to be eligible for your heat pump incentive, as they are the only installers authorized and with exclusive access to process your heating equipment incentive application.

When you are ready to upgrade to clean heating, find a participating contractor near you. They will design a heat pump system based on the size of your home, indoor space, layout, and your aesthetic preferences, and to provide you with cost and applicable incentives based on the type of equipment, premise, and location. After the installation, they'll guide you on how to best operate your new system and finally, process your incentive application. Incentives are delivered in one of two ways, depending on your contractor:

  • Discounted from upfront costs
  • Reimbursement after installation
