Gas Meter Exchange

As part of our commitment to providing reliable service, we are required by Massachusetts law to replace gas meters every seven years, even those that are located inside. This meter replacement is performed at no charge to you and should take approximately 45 minutes.

From September through December 2023, we will perform gas meter exchange work on approximately 60,000 meters throughout Massachusetts – deploying expanded National Grid crews in targeted geographic areas to maximize efficiency and minimize customer impact.

What You Can Expect The Day of the Exchange:

  • We will temporarily safely shut off the gas service to your home to complete the gas meter replacement.

  • Someone 18 years old or older will need to be home to grant our technician access to change the indoor gas meter (if applicable) and relight your appliances.

  • If you are not home when we shut off your gas service, please call us at 800-233-5325 (7:00 a.m. to Midnight, 7 days per week) to have a technician come out and reconnect service. The technician will need access to your home to change out the meter before reconnecting the gas service and will need to reignite your appliances and/or water heater.

Any contractor doing work for National Grid is required to carry ID. If someone requesting entry into your home or place of business does not show an ID card, don’t let that person in and call your local law enforcement.

A National Grid technician will locate the meter and confirm replacement. They will then shut off gas to the house and change the meter. The entire exchange process takes approximately 45 minutes.

A technician will perform the work. All of our employees carry ID. Please ask to see the identification of anyone requesting access to your home prior to letting them inside.

Our technician will need 45 minutes to perform the exchange and relight all of your appliances.

Yes. Even if your meter is located outside, our technician will need to go inside your home to relight your appliances once your gas is turned back on.

The meter exchange is separate from other routine maintenance or servicing and even if you had a National Grid technician on-site recently for other work, they would not have exchanged the meter as part of that process.

Yes, we will need to shut off your gas service during the meter exchange. We will reconnect your service once the work is completed and relight all of your appliances.

Please notify your landlord or building manager so that they can grant our technician access to the meter.
