Leak Survey Inspections
We are committed to the safe, reliable delivery of natural gas to the customers and communities we serve.
To comply with New York State regulations, National Grid is required to periodically inspect all natural gas meters and piping—including those located indoors. These inspections are conducted by licensed contractors at no cost to you.
To ensure the continued safety and reliability of our gas systems, we perform Leak Survey Inspections every one to five years, depending on the location of your meter. Each inspection typically takes about 15 minutes.
Our gas team and trusted contract partners, including RECONN, conduct these routine inspections to proactively monitor our natural gas pipelines and facilities. These surveys help us detect potential leaks and maintain the integrity of our gas delivery systems.
What to Expect During a Leak Survey Inspection:
- Inspections focus on outdoor gas meters and associated piping located on or near your property.
- Inspectors do not need access inside your home unless a leak is detected.
- They may need to enter your yard, including fenced areas, depending on your meter’s location.
- You will be notified in advance, but no appointment is required.
- Inspectors are assigned to specific zones and will walk from meter to meter across multiple properties, including accessing yards and walking along streets.
- Unless a meter requires immediate repair, there will be no interruption to service.
- Service will not be turned off during this inspection due to billing status.
These inspections are a key part of our commitment to delivering safe and reliable natural gas service.
Any contractor doing work for National Grid is required to carry ID. If someone requesting entry into your home or place of business does not show an ID card, don’t let that person in and call your local law enforcement.

Because the work can be done so quickly, it’s likely that you won’t even see the survey being done. But if you do, you’ll see a Reconn contractor in appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) – such as a neon-colored Reconn-branded vest and National Grid hardhat, carrying the survey tool, walking meter to meter. They will also have company-issued identification badges.
