Residential Renovations and Additions

Save money, and energy, with Residential Renovations and Additions

Looking to renovate or add a new addition to your home? The Massachusetts Residential New Construction Renovations & Additions Path can help. The program promotes energy-efficient upgrades and offers incentives for upgrading single- or multi-family homes with three stories or less.

Homes must be within our service territory, and most are eligible for upgrades that may include, but not limited to:

  • Insulation
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
  • Water heating equipment
  • Windows
  • Lighting
  • Air and duct sealing

Calculating Incentives

Eligibility depends on whether the home meets minimum energy savings requirements. Incentives are determined by the amount of electric savings, fuel savings (natural gas, propane, or oil), and overall performance compared to the program baseline. In addition, participating homes are eligible to receive no-cost LED bulbs.

How it Works

  • Pre-construction Home. During an initial site visit, Mass Save calculates how much energy your home currently uses.
  • Baseline Home. Using advanced software, Mass Save calculates energy savings for both the renovated portion of the home and the new addition.
  • Post-construction Home. Mass Save calculates how much energy your updated home uses.

If your renovation or addition incorporates energy efficiency upgrades, you may qualify for incentives.

The Next Steps

  • Site visit: A program representative or third party will contact you to schedule a home site visit. The visit includes a baseline evaluation and an estimate of possible energy savings. Our representative may recommend additional energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Initial incentive estimate: Typically, customers receive an estimate of the incentive amount after the site visit.
  • Make your home improvements: Work with your contractor to complete your renovations or additions.
  • Final inspection: A program representative or third party will schedule and complete a final inspection after construction is finished.
  • Completion letter: After the inspection is processed, you’ll receive an incentive completion notification via email.
  • Incentive check: Within 10 weeks of your final inspection, you’ll receive an incentive check in the mail.
